You may have heard of Nicole Richie from reality TV shows, fashion, her famous father Lionel Richie and of course the tabloids. If you have read celebrity news, or the glossy magazines, chances are you will have also heard of her struggle with heroin alongside a few arrests too. After a while, she looked for help alongside court-ordered rehab, and has now been sober and clean for a few years.

The media these days tends to sensationalise addiction in celebrities, especially when legal problems are involved. Less focus is put on their recovery, although these stories are thankfully becoming more popular as more celebrities feel they can open up about their past.

The numbers on addiction in the United States are overwhelming, with up to 10% of the population having an addiction of some kind. As time goes on, the stigma attached to addiction is lifting, making it more acceptable to talk about addiction and recovery.

Knowing celebrities have struggles with addiction helps in two different ways, it helps the addict understand and become more accepting, and it helps them know that they are not alone.

Nicole Richie’s Story

Nicole is the adopted Daughter of Lionel Richie. During an interview, she told of how she had a cocaine addiction by the age of 18. She blamed not being able to call it a night, and boredom for her addiction to the drug. Lionel claimed that he hadn’t been there for her as much as he should have, but Nicole says it is no fault of his.

Children born into fame grow up with such an excess of money, that they commonly learn no limits to their lifestyle. The famous parents have busy lives and are often not present enough. They also personally lack limits in their lives, and the spotlight on them also brings their kids into the public eye, having to deal with the anxiety and attention from the media. Nicole is taking responsibility for her actions, but addiction isn’t usually just caused by something as little as boredom.

Nicole’s addiction progressed from one thing to another, she received treatment for the cocaine, but moved onto heroin and was caught with this in 2003. On top of all this, there were rumours of eating disorders. She has since completed rehab, become clean, and remained that way for years.

Nicole is now married with kids, and says she will be open and honest with them about her past drugs use. She wants to use the experience as a tool to teach her kids to do better, as they will only find out in the media anyway.

“I think getting into trouble and going through everything in the public eye was good because if I had cleaned up without anyone knowing, maybe I would have figured out how to slip back into it.”
